Jr. Interior Design Associate

The Junior Designer will contribute to the success of The Local Studio by assisting with all aspects of design development including Pre-Design, Schematic Design, Design Development, Construction Documents and Construction Administration. The Junior. Designer will contribute to the overall look and feel of project interiors with direction from Lead Designer. The Junior Designer will report to the Project Lead on tasks and deliverables and work directly with them to ensure the facilitation of a project’s completion. As the Jr. Interior Design Associate, you are required to perform the following duties and undertake the following responsibilities in a professional manner.

Construction Documentation Requirements

  • Model and detail plans and elevations in Autodesk Revit software

  • 3D model elevations from drawings with accuracy 

  • Can draw and tag finished plans and elevations 

  • Can produce basic sections and details of millwork and furniture 

  • Can produce door, hardware, plumbing, lighting, finish schedules 

  • Can produce lighting and electrical plans 

  • Assist in putting together a construction binder as per TLS standards for the trades  

  • Able to produce furniture layouts and floor plans skillfully

  • Create visioning, schematic, and design development presentations that thoroughly convey design intent to the client, includes sourcing imagery of similar project types and/or design ideas

FF&E Specification Requirements 

  • Review spec sheets and detail into plans and elevation with accuracy to ensure they are compliant to the design and will be able to function properly for the end user  

  • Format actual specs on sheets into construction packages 

  • Can format a completed spec book including index sheets and contacts

  • Can draw simple custom furniture drawings and details

  • Know how to produce drapery and bedding drawings, custom upholstered furniture, case goods, lighting, and custom furniture. 

  • Produce all drawings for fabrication in Revit. 

  • Contact vendors, order samples, collect and document pricing and lead times.

  • Selects appropriate FF&E products for review that capture the look and aesthetic of the project as well as durability and pricing

  • Assist in selecting finishes for various projects and input data into finish schedules; furniture & floor pattern plans and diagrams as necessary.

  • Create project material finish boards as needed, under direction of senior designers.

  • Visit showrooms to collect samples and specifications of products

  • Receive and check products as they are delivered to the studio and warehouse 

  • Tender out FF&E packages to vendors, complete quote requests and organize quotes and lead times 

  • Create client proposals and invoices for multiple projects 

  • Calculate material take offs for trades and vendors 

Teamwork 

  • Asks questions for clarity, keep team informed of progress 

  • Maintain and track hours on project work

  • Communicate any deviation with Project Lead

  • Communicate with Project Lead regularly, alerting them of possible problems or conflicts with project specs, drawings, vendor delays, etc. 

  • When required, candidate must make site trips with Senior Designer to assist with scope of work required for the project in question

  • Attend and assist with project installations

  • In-depth knowledge of kitchen and bath systems and finishes

  • Demonstrated understanding of basic principles of space planning

  • Consistency regardless of project size

  • Stay current with the design world using magazines, internet or other means to educate self to industry trends, new products and materials.

  • Shows willingness to learn new ideas and processes

Education and Experience 

  • Diploma or Bachelor of Interior Design 

  • Experience with Millwork (custom cabinetry) is an asset

  • 1 – 2 Years’ experience in the creative industry is an asset

  • Transportation and valid driver’s license

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally; hold a valid passport

Skills expected to be developed while a Junior Designer: 

  • Know how to write a specification accurately and to TLS standards; wood types, finishes, durability, widths, weights, yardages, upholstery, fill notes – including all instructions required to fabricate the product. 

  • Know vendors, what they represent in products, where to find specific styles of fabrics, furniture, lighting, wall covering, manufacturer specification. Able to meet with vendors for new products. 

  • Know the operational and local/provincial building codes 

  • Demonstrated ability to do tasks in assigned hours/time with time management skills. 

  • Able to tag layouts and floor plans with keys and required notes. 

  • Familiar with and able to implement all TLS standards, processes and procedures.
